Baby & Child motor development: from 15 months old to 4 years!

Last two weeks, we viewed what kind of motor activity and movement you could expect your baby has at birth and up to one year old. Today, let’s see child development from 15 months to 4 years old with a summary table!  

When your baby reaches 15 months:

  • Your baby can now walk alone
  • Walking upstairs is possible but still being on his four
  • Your child is able to stand up by himself but still lack stability and fall heavily
  • Kneeling and passing from sitting to standing is done without help

When your baby reaches 18 months:

  • Running start to be possible for your baby but legs and arms are apart, not well coordinated and falls are frequents
  • He can go upstairs standing up but need to hold the handrail
  • Your infant squat to catch something on the floor
  • He start jumping on his own
  • He can walk and pull a toy behind him
  • Your infant should be able to walk backward
 

When your baby is 2 years old:

  • Your infant go upstairs and downstairs by himself but a step at a time bringing both feet on a step for each one
  • Running is improving: more stable and faster
  • New activities are possible: running in circle, dancing, climbing…
  • Shooting in a ball (being stable) is also a big new

When your baby is 3 years old:

  • Your child can go upstairs and downstairs like an adult (one foot one step)
  • He can jump the last step of the stairs as a game!
  • Jump on one foot and can stand one foot for few seconds
  • Riding a tricycle!
 

When your baby is 4 years old:

  • Your child can ride a bike without extra wheels!
  • He can go in and out the car without help
  • It is also a good age to see a podiatrist to check is feet and see if his legs have strengthen (at birth they are curved inward)
