Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
What Pelvic Floor is?
The perineum is a set of muscles from the pubis to the base of the spine. Having the form of a hammock, it is the floor that supports the abdominal organs: the bladder, the uterus, the intestine and the rectum. Throughout pregnancy, the perineum supported the weight of the baby, the amniotic liquid and the placenta. Thereby, this hammock became more and more distended until the moment of the delivery by low way where it was widely opened to let the baby pass. With an increased pressure all along the pregnancy and childbirth, the perineum has lost a good part of its tonicity and can no longer assume its role of support and maintenance of the organs in the pelvis.
Why a Pelvic Floor Rehab?
The purpose of rehabilitation is to teach the woman to tone this set of muscles in order to prevent possible complications such as urinary leaks, pain during sexual intercourse or even the descent of the organ (prolapse). Getting to know her perineum better also means learning how to protect her and preserving her quality of life in the future!
When to Start?
The best period for pelvic floor rehabilitation is about 4 to 6 weeks after delivery. But if necessary, it can be done at any time of life.
I use the CMP method – Knowledge and Mastery of the Perineum. It is a French manual technique of educational rehabilitation, which, thanks to the visualization of images, allows the patient to work autonomously in each area of the perineum, deep and superficial. Thus, she learns to become aware of her perineum, to know it and to control it in order to maintain its tonicity.
Each session with your Private Midwife lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. A first session is necessary to evaluate the perineum. Then, depending on the initial situation, the possible symptoms, and the personal work of the patient, an individual program can be put in place.
French midwife graduate since 2007, Pauline Fetu worked for more than 10 years in a hospital near Paris. In 2012 I enriched my experience with an inter-university nutrition diploma in order to better support my patients in consultation.
Having become a mother myself 3 times during those years, I realized the importance of personalized and unlimited support throughout this wonderful period of pregnancy and the arrival of a child. Pregnancy is a unique time, a wonderful part of our lives, but it is also a leap into the unknown. So much happiness and so much concern at once. Feeling supported, accompanied, is essential. Becoming a mother, even more so abroad for some of you, often far from family, is an adventure mixed with doubts and fears.
In order to assist you in this adventure and to answer your questions, I propose a personalized follow-up throughout these 9 months and during the weeks or months following the birth.
