Proprioceptive Exercises Stability

Proprioception is the 6th sense of your body (yes, we have more than 5th sense). It enables us to perceive the exact position of joints and limbs (you don’t need to open your eyes to be able to touch your nose with your finger).

Thank to proprioception, we also avoid injuring ourselves. When we twist our ankle, it stretches proprioceptive captors in our joints and muscles triggering a reflex contraction of these muscles preventing muscle/ligament tear.

However, following an injury, a surgery or an immobilisation, the proprioceptive sense of the concern area diminishes. It explains why once you twist your ankle badly; there is an important risk of re occurrence. Or why after a knee surgery even if it healed completely, the knee will still be unstable.

Therefore, proprioceptive exercises combining different techniques and level of difficulty intend to restore this impaired sense and avoid further injury.
